St. Augustine
(354-430)

Have pity, O Lord God,
lest they who go by the way trample on the unfledged bird,
and send Thine Angel to replace it in the nest,
that it may live till it can fly.

Richard of Chichester

You, God of my Love, are the Life of souls,
The Life of lives,
Livingness itself,
and You shall not change,
O Life of my soul.

O God our Father, hear me,
who am trembling in this darkness,
and stretch forth Thy hand unto me;
hold forth Thy light before me;
recall me from my wanderings;
and, Thou being my guide,
may I be restored,
to myself, and Thee.
amen

O come, Thou refreshment of them that languish and faint.
Come, Thou Star and Guide of them that sail in the tempestuous sea of the world;
Thou only Haven of the tossed and shipwrecked.
Come, Thou Glory and Crown of the living,
and only Safeguard of the dying.
Come, Holy Spirit, in much mercy,
and make me fit to receive Thee.

O thou, full of compassion,
I commit and commend myself unto thee,
in whom I am, and live, and know.

Be thou the goal of my pilgrimage,
and my rest by the way.
Let my soul take refuge from the crowding turmoil
of worldly thought beneath the shadow of thy wings;
Let my heart, this sea of restless waves,
find peace in thee, O God.

amen

Watch Thou, dear Lord, with those who wake and watch or weep tonight, and give thine angels charge over those who sleep.
Tend Thy sick ones, O Lord Christ;
rest Thy weary ones; bless Thy dying ones;
soothe Thy suffering ones;
shield Thy joyous ones,
and all
for Thy Love's sake.
