St. Augustine
(354-430)

Do what you can, and then
pray that God will give you the power to do
what you cannot.

Richard of Chichester

O Thou, who fillest heaven and earth,
ever acting, ever at rest,
who art present everywhere
and everywhere art wholly present,
who art not absent even when far off,
who with thy whole being fillest yet transcendest all things,
who teaches the hearts of the faithful
without the din of words;
teach us, we pray Thee,
through Jesus Christ Our Lord.

amen

O Father, light up
the small duties of this day's life:
may they shine
with the beauty of your countenance.
May we believe that glory can dwell
in the commonest task of every day.

amen

And I talked with you as friends talk,
my glory and my riches and my Salvation,
my Lord God . . . .
O Thou, the Power of my soul,
enter into it and fit it for Thyself,
that Thou mayest have it and possess it
without spot or wrinkle.
This is my hope,
This is my prayer.

amen.

God of our life,
There are days when the burdens we carry
chafe our shoulders and weigh us down;
when the road seems dreary and endless,
the skies grey and threatening;
when our lives have no music in them,
and our hearts are lonely,
and our souls have lost their courage.

Flood the path with light,
turn our eyes to where the skies are full of promise;
tune our hearts to brave music;
give us the sense of comradeship
with heroes and saints of every age;

and so quicken our spirits
that we may be able to encourage
the souls of all who journey with us
on the road of life,
to your honour and glory.

Let my Soul take refuge

amen
